The Flames Are Out - Now the Real Work Begins
A structural fire can escalate in seconds. In less than one minute, flames can double in size. Within 10 minutes, a blaze can grow 64 times larger. Fortunately, most fires in Canadian homes and businesses are contained quickly - often limited to a single room.
But even a small fire can leave behind lasting damage if the right steps aren’t taken immediately.
“Any structural fire is overwhelming, regardless of size,” says Bob Hillier, President of Paul Davis Restoration of Greater Houston. “The first few hours after the flames are out are critical. What you do - and don’t do - can make a huge difference.”
What NOT to Do After a Fire
Do NOT use electronics like TVs, computers, or appliances. Smoke particles may have entered the internal components, risking corrosion or short circuits.
Do NOT wipe or clean surfaces (walls, ceilings, furniture, etc.). Soot is corrosive and can cause more damage if treated improperly. Leave it to the professionals.
Do NOT run your HVAC system. Heaters, fans, or air conditioners can spread smoke and soot to unaffected areas of your home or building.
What You SHOULD Do Right Away
Open windows if it’s safe to do so, to ventilate smoke and odours.
Close doors to affected rooms to contain soot and particles.
Relocate pets to a clean, safe environment. Birds are especially sensitive to airborne toxins.
Vacuum or gently brush loose soot from carpets—but avoid walking on them until they’ve been professionally cleaned.
Empty refrigerators and freezers. Even if doors are shut tight, smoke and fire residue can affect the interiors.
Wipe down plant leaves with mild soapy water to remove residue that can block sunlight and damage foliage.
