Safety, Compassion, and Practical Help for Seniors in Times of Crisis
Disasters don’t affect everyone equally. Older adults often face greater risks during emergencies due to mobility challenges, medical conditions, or isolation. As community members, neighbours, and family, it’s our responsibility to make sure they’re not left behind.
Here’s how to support seniors before, during, and after a disaster.
Before the Disaster:
Be Proactive
Start the conversation early
- Ask about their current preparedness plan — or help them build one.
- Ensure they have emergency contacts and know who to call in case of evacuation.
Help create a senior-specific emergency kit
In addition to standard supplies (food, water, flashlight, etc.), include:
- Prescription medications and copies of prescriptions
- Glasses, hearing aids, mobility devices, or batteries
- Medical information (conditions, allergies, insurance)
- Comfort items (blanket, family photos, books)
Prepare for evacuation or shelter-in-place needs
- Arrange transportation in advance (especially if they don’t drive).
- Identify shelters that accommodate seniors or medical needs.
- Discuss who will check in on them during a crisis.
Reinforce the home
- Check smoke detectors, carbon monoxide alarms, and emergency exits.
- Make sure flashlights and warm blankets are easily accessible.
During the Disaster:
Stay Connected and Calm
Check in immediately
- If safe, visit them or call to provide updates and reassurance.
- Ensure they understand any alerts or instructions.
Offer hands-on support
- Help them evacuate or access supplies.
- Stay calm — your reassurance is just as important as your actions.
Monitor their health
- Watch for signs of stress, confusion, or medical distress.
- Ensure they’re staying hydrated and warm.
After the Disaster:
Recovery With Dignity
Help assess damage
- Safely walk through the home with them.
- Photograph damage for insurance and restoration purposes.
Support with claims and paperwork
- Help fill out forms, contact insurers, and understand next steps.
Restore a sense of normal
- Set up temporary housing if needed.
- Re-establish routines like meals, medications, and social contact.
Watch for emotional distress
- Older adults may feel overwhelmed or depressed.
- Encourage open conversation or connect them to support services.
