Holiday Hazards: Fire Risks from Lights, Heaters, and Cooking

Decorations, space heaters, and festive meals bring joy — but they also increase fire risk. Stay safe this season.

The holidays are a time for warmth, celebration, and togetherness. But behind the glow of string lights and the smell of holiday cooking lies a hidden danger: fire. December sees a spike in home fires across Canada, many of which are preventable with a little extra care.

Here’s how to celebrate safely and avoid common seasonal fire hazards:

1. Be Smart with Holiday Lighting

Twinkling lights look great — until they overload your outlets or overheat.

  • Inspect all lights before use. Replace frayed wires or broken bulbs
  • Never run cords under rugs or furniture
  • Use CSA- or UL-certified lights and power bars
  • Turn off all decorations before bed or leaving the house

Tip: Use LED lights — they stay cooler and use less energy.

2. Space Heaters Need Space

Portable heaters are great for extra warmth but must be used with caution.

  • Keep heaters at least 3 feet (1 metre) from anything flammable
  • Never leave a heater unattended
  • Plug directly into the wall, not a power bar
  • Choose models with automatic shut-off features

3. Cook with Caution

Kitchen fires are the leading cause of home fires during the holidays. Distractions are the biggest risk.

  • Stay in the kitchen when cooking — especially when using high heat or frying
  • Keep flammable items (like towels or packaging) away from the stovetop
  • Turn pot handles inward to avoid spills or accidents
  • Never try to put out a grease fire with water — use a lid or fire extinguisher

4. Check Your Smoke Alarms

  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms monthly
  • Replace batteries every 6 months
  • Make sure you have alarms on every floor and outside all sleeping areas

Bonus safety tip

Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen — and make sure everyone knows how to use it.
